UN peace-keeper from Nepal dies in Sudan

KATHMANDU: Brigadier General (Technical) of Nepal Army, Bharat Prasad Singh, who was working as a United Nations peacekeeper under the United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur in Sudan, died on January 24.
Brigadier General Singh was admitted to the Baraha Medical City (Level III) for treatment where he breathed his last on Sunday last week, the NA Directorate of Public Relations said in a statement today.
Singh’s body was airlifted to the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) from the Etihad Airport on Sunday.
The national army said it concluded Singh’s final procession and funeral on Monday. The procession had started from Chaunni-based Birendra Hospital and ended at the Pashupati Aryaghat.
Acting Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Baldev Raj Mahat along with high officials and family members of the deceased offered their final tributes to Singh. A Nepal Army troop also gave the farewell salute to honour the armyman.
For the last six decades, Nepal Army has been serving in different riot-hit nations for world peace under the leadership of United Nations. So far, 63 army personnel have died during the peacekeeping missions.
