Beauty 101: How to use an eyebrow pencil

Beauty 101: How to use an eyebrow pencil
Expert advice on the right way to do it.
If eyes are the window to the soul, eyebrows are something like a sneak peek. They’re relatively unmatched by any other facial feature in their capacity to hint at our emotions so they’re worth some good grooming. Too much brow pencil will look odd and too little won’t give them enough expressive power and face-framing ability, so get on top of your technique. Here’s how.
Which brow are you?
The way you use an eyebrow pencil will vary depending on desired effect. So first decide whether you’re a Lily CollinsCamilla Belle or perhaps you’re naturally fine or light-haired and just need a slight helping hand.
If you have light hair/ soft brows
Start from the inner corner towards the bottom and begin, using light strokes, in the direction of the brow hairs. Start soft and layer the colour. Take a step back from the mirror when you’ve done each layer and assess whether you’ve put on enough. Even better if you can step away for a couple of minutes and return with fresh eyes. There’s so many different pencils out there, but the best ones, if you have light hair are those that allow you to build up colour.
For medium weight brows
This is about filling in the blanks. A good technique here is to emphasise areas that are visually already the most striking to avoid looking like a different person when you’re done. Draw in tiny dashes along the bottom of your eyebrow working to the top and then blend in with a brush. Try a pencil that has a calligraphy-style tip. The flat side you can use to fill out the thicker areas near the inner corners and the thin tip can we used for finer work on the outer edges, then blend with the attached brush.
Dark brows/ the full Cara
A pencil with a gel- or waxlike formula is best for this as it gives a more intense colour. Just because you want heavy brows doesn’t mean you should immediately choose a dark colour. The rule here is to still select a shade closer to your natural colour. Start by filling the gaps here, as before but stop and look before you begin on the rest of your brows. You might be finished with a few areas shaded in, as your natural hairs will give you a darker look. Brush the brows up and outwards, adding slightly more pencil until you’re happy.
