Thapa hints at embargo ease

Dec 4, 2015- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Kamal Thapa said that his visit to India had helped clear misunderstanding between the two countries and that difficulties in transit “will ease soon”.
Shortly after landing in Kathmandu on Thursday, speaking at a press conference at the Tribhuvan International Airport and at the Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal headquarters in Dhumbarahi, Thapa said he was encouraged by his discussions with Indian officials in Delhi.
During his meeting with his counterpart Sushma Swaraj, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and two dozen Indian leaders mostly from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, Thapa is said to have conveyed Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s roadmap for solution to end the standoff with the agitating Madhes-based parties by amending the constitution and ensuring proportional representation in state organs except in the Army. Electoral constituencies would be redrawn on the basis of population.
To address the state boundary row, the government and the major parties are mulling over instituting a powerful federal delineation commission with a mandate to settle the disputes within three months.
Thapa said he had assured the Indian leaders that a high-level political committee comprising representatives from the ruling, opposition and agitating parties will be formed to look into the dispute in federal units along with five disputed districts, according to RPP-N leaders who were briefed on Thapa’s Delhi visit.
Indian leaders had told Thapa that they were worried about the growing anti-Indian sentiment in Nepal and “objectionable” statements made by some top leaders
and ministers of Nepal. “Situation will return to normal soon. Let’s wait for the result,” Thapa said without specifying a timeline.
